Sanità

Giuseppe Boerio (1754-1832) published his Dizionario del Dialetto Veneziano (Dictionary of the Venetian Dialect) in 1829 (2nd ed. 1856, 3rd ed. 1867). It is an invaluable tool for anybody who reads texts from the time of the Republic of Venice.

SANITÀ, s. f. Sanità; Prosperous state; Worthiness.

Chi ga la sanità xe rico e no lo sa, He who has health is rich and doesn’t know it, Proverb, and it is true that health prevails over riches.

Sanità was the title of the supreme Magistracy of the former Venetian Government, composed of five Judges of the patrician order, two of whom were Senators.1 All matters relating to public health, both immediate and intermediate, as were delegated to it by the Senate, were exclusively reserved to this Tribunal. They were called the Most Illustrious and Most Excellent Lords Superintendents and Over-superintendents of Health.

Translator’s notes
