Procurator di san Marco
The Lessico Veneto (Venetian Vocabulary) by Fabio Mutinelli was published in 1851. It is an invaluable tool for anybody who reads texts from the time of the Republic of Venice.
Fabio Mutinelli (1797-1876) was director of the I. R. Archivio Generale di Venezia (1847-1861), and a prolific writer on the history of Venice.

— di san Marco. Dignity, after that of the doge, the most eminent in the republic, and conferred on those citizens who had made themselves deserving of it through distinguished services rendered either in embassies, or in the command of armies, or in other important offices of the State. This dignity began in the 9th century, when the body of the evangelist Saint Mark was transported to Venice from Alexandria in Egypt, the construction of the basilica in honour of him began, with a citizen with the title of Procuratore being appointed to supervise the construction. Ordinarily, the Procuratori di san Marco were nine, having already been declared, since the year 1453, perpetual senators with the right of suffrage.

PROCURATOR, v. Magistrato del Procurator.
–– di san Marco. Dignità, dopo quella del doge, la più eminente della repubblica, e conferita a que’ cittadini i quali se ne fossero resi meritevoli per distinti servigii prestati o nelle ambascerie, o nel comando delle armate, o nelle altre principali cariche dello Stato. Questa dignità ebbe principio nel IX secolo, quando trasportato a Venezia da Alessandria di Egitto il corpo dell’ evangelista san Marco, si diè cominciamento alla erezione della basilica in suo onore, destinandosi a soprantendere alla fabbrica un cittadino col nome di Procuratore. Ordinariamente i Procuratori di san Marco erano nove, essendo stati già dichiarati, sin dall’ anno 1453, senatori perpetui con diritto di suffragio.
