700s

Fall of the Byzantine Exarchy (0751)

The Byzantine Exarchy in NE Italy came to a definitive end with the Lombard conquest of Ravenna in 751.

Carolingian conquest of the Kingdom of the Lombards (0774)

The Carolingian conquest of northern Italy in 774 put an end to the Kingdom of the Lombards.

800s

War with the Franks (0809)

The Franks, under Pipin, son of Charlemagne, attacked the lagoon in 809, and burned the ducal palace at Malamocco.

Treaty of Aachen (0812)

The Peace of Aachen was a treaty from 812 between the Caroligian and the Byzantine Empires, which established their border.

Relics of St Mark arrived in Venice (0828)

The Relics of St Mark arrived in Venice in 828 (according to legend).

First St Mark's church (0829–0830)

The first Church of St Mark was built in the years 829–830 near the Palazzo Ducale.

League of Cambrai (1508–1511)

Fourth Ottoman–Venetian War (1570–1573)

Venice lost Cyprus in the Fourth Ottoman–Venetian War, but won the Battle of Lepanto. It is also known as the War of Cyprus.

Plague Epidemic (1575–1577)

The plague epidemic of 1575–1577 in Venice killed between 50,000 and 60,000 persons, circa one third of the entire population.

1600s

Plague Epidemic (1630–1631)

The plague epidemic of 1630–31 in Venice killed around 40,000 persons, circa one third of the entire population.

Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War (1684–1699)

The Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War (or the Morean War) ended with the Venetian conquest of Morea.

Siege of the Acropolis (September 23rd–29th, 1687)

The Venetian siege of Athens led to the destruction of the Temple of Athena on the Acropolis.
