Ruffiana
The four volumes of Gli abiti de veneziani di quasi ogni età con diligenza raccolti e dipinti nel secolo XVIII, by Giovanni Grevembroch (1731–1807), contains over six hundred watercolours of how Venetians dressed in the 1700s.
Giovanni Grevembroch worked for the Venetian nobleman Pietro Gradenigo for two decades, during which he made over three thousand drawings and watercolours. This body of work found its way, with the rest of Gradenigo’s library, into the collections of the Museo Correr.
Ruffian
Retired, whether by age or misfortune, the Prostitute, mostly does not retreat from that path, which for a long time with disgrace she has trod.
We read in the preceding expositions the method of life, which these were accustomed to holding, and here we must demonstrate the diabolical practice of the old Women, to make the unwary Young Women fall. They are masters of vices, and of snatching the money of others, without any synderesis,1 they weave those artful nets, in which, unfortunately, both Sexes stumble. Under the guise of Protectors they give shelter, and provide for Widows, and Adults, and what is more, Girls of poor condition, hoping that by this means they will become well-fed, and opulent.
Inficit, ut coluber facies infecta scelesti.
Secum flamina vorax associata cremat.
To the Old and mature Mrs. Regina Nuvoloni, who willingly accepted the opportunity to provide for herself and others’ needs without envy, we leave that she may profit better in the future in the place of such depraved brokers.

Ruffiana
Dimessa, che sia, o per età, o per sfortuna la Meretrice, non recede per lo più da quella strada, che per lungo tempo con vituperio ha calcata.
Leggessimo nelle antecedenti esposizioni il metodo di vita, che furono solite tenere costoro, e qui devesi dimostrare l’esercizio diabolico delle vecchie Femine, per far cadere le incaute Giovani. Maestre esse de’ vizij, e di attrappare l’altrui denaro, senza sinderesi alcuna, tessono quelle artificiose reti, nelle quali pur troppo inciampa l’uno, e l’altro Sesso. Sotto specie di Tutrici danno ricovero, e provedono Vedove, ed Adulte, e quel, ch’è più, Fanciulle di povera condizione, speranzandole a devenire con questo mezzo ben satolle, ed opulenti.
