Podestà

The podestà was an appointed local administrator under the French and Austrian dominations:

The Fascist regime reverted to appointed local administrators, as they weren’t that keen on democracy.

In the Italian Republic mayors are elected, either directly or indirectly by the city council. In Venice the mayor is elected directly since 1993.

If a mayor loses the support of the municipal assembly, or has to resign for other reasons, but only a short time remains for regular elections, the Italian state appoints a commissioners to run a caretaker administration until elections are due.
