Inchiostro — plate 46

The Arti che vanno per via nella città di Venezia (1753, 1770, 1785, etc.), by Gaetano Zompini (1700–1778), contains sixty engravings of common, mostly poor people, peddling their trades on the streets of Venice in the mid-1700s.

Son quel, che inchiostro fin da scriver vendo,
E insieme ghò la roba per i sorzi,
Cioè tossego per lori assae tremendo.

Translation

I'm the one who sells fine ink for writing,
And I also have the stuff for rats,
That is, a very terrible poison for them.

Notes

Apparently, some traditional types of ink — like iron gall ink — can be toxic for small mammals, which might explain why the same street vendor would sell both quality ink for writing and rat or mouse poison.
