Botter — plate 57

The Arti che vanno per via nella città di Venezia (1753, 1770, 1785, etc.), by Gaetano Zompini (1700–1778), contains sixty engravings of common, mostly poor people, peddling their trades on the streets of Venice in the mid-1700s.

Text

Un de nu incerchia bote in le Casae,
L’altro Masteli grandi, e Mastelete,
E avemo anca boteghe per Citae.

Translation

One of us puts hoops on barrels in the houses,
Another makes buckets, big and small,
And we also have workshops around the city.

Notes

Barrels and wooden basins and buckets were everywhere for storing water, wine and other liquids. The boteri — coopers or barrel makers — were therefore an important craft.

Besides barrels, they also made wooden buckets of various sizes.

Plates 31 (Frittole), 33 (Aseo), 35 (Dolce de Vedeletto) and 60 (Vin in quarta) all display examples of the work of the coopers.

See Boerio (1829), entries BOTÈR and MASTÈLA.
