Sponze, Naranze , ec. — plate 45

The Arti che vanno per via nella città di Venezia (1753, 1770, 1785, etc.), by Gaetano Zompini (1700–1778), contains sixty engravings of common, mostly poor people, peddling their trades on the streets of Venice in the mid-1700s.

Text

Sponze, naranze, cedri, e da Ferara
Le scoe mi vendo, e fenochi, e limoni;
Robe che a dirla tute à la so tara.

Translation

Sponges, oranges, citrons, and from Ferrara
I sell brooms, and fennel, and lemons;
Stuff, to say it, all by its weight.

Notes

A rather odd mixture of products, but it might depend more on what supplies he had access to, than on any kind of modern logic or reasoning.

His bag is a simple round mat of wicker, bent together. There’s an identical bag on plate 50.
