Quarantia
Giuseppe Boerio (1754-1832) published his Dizionario del Dialetto Veneziano (Dictionary of the Venetian Dialect) in 1829 (2nd ed. 1856, 3rd ed. 1867). It is an invaluable tool for anybody who reads texts from the time of the Republic of Venice.
QUARANTIA, s. f. Quarantia. This name was commonly given to the three supreme judicial councils of the Venetian Republic which judged both civil and criminal cases as the last resort: so called from the number of forty judges of which each was composed; and therefore with another name they were called Councils of Forty, one called Criminal, the other Old Civil and the third New Civil (See Pregadi). The criminal Quarantia was sometimes delegated by the Senate to judge civil cases; The Old Civil decided the cases of Venice exceeding 1500 ducats; The New Civil those of mainland, the Levant, Dalmatia, Albania, Istria and Friuli exceeding the said sum.

QUARANTIA, s. f. Quarantia. Si chiamavano volgarmente con tal nome li tre supremi giudiziari Consigli della Repubblica Veneta che giudicavano in ultima istanza le cause tanto civili che criminali: così detti dal numero di quaranta Giudici di cui era cadauno composto; e quindi con altro nome erano chiamati Consigli di quaranta, uno detto Criminale, l’altro Civil vecchio e il terzo Civil nuovo (V.
p. 544Pregadi). La Quarantia criminale era talvolta delegata dal Senato a giudicare delle cause civili; La Civil vecchia decideva le cause di Venezia eccedenti li ducati 1500; La Civil nuova quelle di Terra ferma, del Levante, della Dalmazia, Albania, Istria e Friuli eccedenti la detta somma.
