The ˆL’Archivio di Stato di Venezia : indice generale, storico, descrittivo ed analitico (shortened ASV Indice) — The Italian State Archive in Venice : general, historical, descriptive and analytical index — by Andrea da Mosto from 1937 might seem interesting only to the most hardened users of the Italian national archives, but it is a very useful reference to all the major and minor institutions and offices of the Republic of Venice.

While being primarily an index into the holdings of documents from the Republic of Venice, in the Italian national archive in Venice, it also contains detailed descriptions of many of the state offices and institutions which produced those documents.

Therefore, even if you’re not a habitual user of the Italian national archive in Venice, this publication is still very useful for anybody interested in Venetian history.

The publication was originally printed in a few hundred numbered copies, but it can now be downloaded directly (PDF) from the web site of the Archivio di Stato di Venezia.

Since the title is very long, I will often refer to it simply as ASV Indice.

Andrea da Mosto

Andrea Da Mosto (1868-1960) was, as the name implies, a descendant of ancient Venetian aristocracy. He worked for most of his life in the Italian national state archives, and was director of the Archivio di Stato di Venezia in the years 1936-37.
