Revendigola — plate 39

The Arti che vanno per via nella città di Venezia (1753, 1770, 1785, etc.), by Gaetano Zompini (1700–1778), contains sixty engravings of common, mostly poor people, peddling their trades on the streets of Venice in the mid-1700s.

Text

Revendigola son, che per le case
Vago per tor su drapi da dar via;
E per far zo chi compra ho una gran frase.

Translation

I'm a reseller, who walks around the houses,
To find clothes to give away;
And to trick those who buys, I know just the words.

Notes

A revendigolo is someone who re-sells something. In this case, drapi probably means used clothes in general, but it’s a term which has several meanings, such as fabric of pure silk, and pieces of linen used by women for their period.

The Venetian zo means down, but far zo somebody means to disabuse them of an illusion or a belief, and far zo una puta means to seduce or trick a young girl.

See Boerio (1829), entries REVENDİGOLO, DRAPO, ZO – FAR ZO QUALCÙN – FAR ZO UNA PUTA.
