Gaetano Zompini - Arti che vanno per via - plate 32 - Pescaor - steet vendor of fish

Pescaor— plate 32

The Arti che vanno per via nella città di Venezia (1753, 1770, 1785, etc.), by Gaetano Zompini (1700–1778), contains sixty engravings of common, mostly poor people, peddling their trades on the streets of Venice in the mid-1700s.

Text

In sti canestri gho del pesse aposta
Da poco prezzo per la povertae,
Che in pescaria se vende quel che costa.

Translation

In these baskets, I have some fish
At a low price for the poor,
Because at the fish market they sell what costs.

Notes

Apparently, the street fishmonger was cheaper than at the market, maybe because the fish would be less fresh.
