Barbarèla
Giuseppe Boerio (1754-1832) published his Dizionario del Dialetto Veneziano (Dictionary of the Venetian Dialect) in 1829 (2nd ed. 1856, 3rd ed. 1867). It is an invaluable tool for anybody who reads texts from the time of the Republic of Venice.
BARBARÈLA, s. f. At the time of the Venetian Government, every year on the day of St. Barbara, the Doge, sitting in the College,1 drew by lot from an urn the names of thirty Patricians aged between the ages of twenty and 25, to be admitted to the Great Council. And therefore Vegnir ala barbarèla, meant Being extracted on the day of St. Barbara, Be authorized to vote in the Grand Council before the legal age of 25 years of age. On this day the Doge awarded the medal. V. OSÈLA.

p. 63Vegnir ala barbarèla, voleva dire Essere estratto nel dì di s. Barbara, Essere abilitato ad entrar con voto nel Gran Consiglio prima dell’ età legale degli anni 25 compiuti. In questo giorno il Doge dispensava la medaglia. V. OSÈLA.
