The Duchy of Spoleto was a Lombard duchy in central Italy, established following the Lombard invasion in 568. Formally a part of the Kingdom of the Lombards, but often more autonomous as it was semi-detached from the northern parts of the kingdom.
The Liber Pontificalis for Gregory II (715–731), recounts in great detail the conflicts between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Papacy, with repeated attempts at the life of the pope.
